How to prepare your office for a cabling installation
A practical checklist for device locations, equipment needs, site access, and installation handover.
Start with how your space works
Before choosing cables or equipment, map the people, devices, and spaces that need reliable connections. A simple floor plan and equipment list give your installer a useful starting point.
1. Mark the connection points
Show workstations, printers, access points, cameras, and point-of-sale equipment on your floor plan. Include planned work areas and equipment you expect to add. Flag places where exposed cable would interfere with daily work.
2. List device requirements
Record device models, connection counts, and any installation requirements supplied by your equipment vendors. Note devices that need Power over Ethernet so the installer can assess power needs alongside the network design.
3. Share access and scheduling constraints
Identify building access rules, landlord requirements, business hours, and spaces that cannot be interrupted. Have the installer assess cable routes, equipment locations, and any power or building requirements before work begins.
4. Agree on the handover
Ask how connections will be labeled and tested, what documentation you will receive, and who will approve the finished work. Keep the final port map and test records with your equipment information.
Bring this to your planning conversation
A floor plan, device list, access contact, preferred work window, and list of known issues can help make the conversation more useful. Exact scope and installation timing depend on the site.
