SEO, AEO, and GEO: how search visibility is changing

Marketing & Growth / Search visibility

People still search for websites. They also ask for direct answers and use AI to compare options. SEO, AEO, and GEO describe overlapping ways to make your business useful in those moments.

One foundation. Three ways to be discovered.

Start with clear, accurate, accessible content. AEO and GEO are industry terms with overlapping meanings—not separate certifications or guaranteed routes into an AI answer.

What does each one mean?

Find the page

SEO

Search engine optimization helps search engines discover and understand useful pages so people can find them in relevant search results.

Best use
Service pages, local discovery, product research, and useful guides.
Business question
Can the right customer find a page that meets their need?
Answer the question

AEO

Answer engine optimization is the practice of making a clear answer easy to identify, understand, and reuse in answer-led experiences.

Best use
Definitions, preparation questions, troubleshooting, and concise explanations.
Business question
Does this page answer the specific question accurately and directly?
Inform the conversation

GEO

Generative engine optimization focuses on making your information understandable and useful as source material for AI-generated responses.

Best use
Comparisons, nuanced questions, evidence-backed explanations, and buying research.
Business question
Can a system understand who we are, what we know, and why our information is credible?

A single page can serve all three. A good cabling guide can rank as a search result, answer a preparation question, and help inform an AI comparison. Clear answers help readers whether or not a platform chooses to feature them.

Match the work to the customer's question.

Choose a search situation to see how the content and measurement change.

“Network installation in Lodi”

Build: a clear service page with the work offered, genuine service area, project examples, business details, and a useful next step. Keep local business information consistent.

Watch: relevant search visibility, qualified visits, calls, and consultation requests. A ranking has value when it connects the right person with your service.

“What should I prepare before a cabling installation?”

Build: a direct opening answer, followed by an HTML checklist, practical exceptions, and links to deeper guidance. Define unfamiliar terms in plain language.

Watch: whether the page answers the intended question, relevant query performance, and useful next actions. Do not assume every clear answer will become a featured snippet or spoken result.

“Which CRM fits a small service company with limited admin time?”

Build: a balanced comparison with named evaluation criteria, clear tradeoffs, sources, review dates, and business-specific examples. Explain how the recommendation changes with the situation.

Watch: relevant citations or mentions where a platform exposes them, referral quality, and qualified inquiries. Repeated manual checks are only a sample; answers can vary by query, product, and context.

A conceptual map—not market-share data

Build upward from the same foundation.

SEO · Discoverable pagesCrawlable pages, useful titles, internal links, good page experience, and content that meets a real need.
AEO · Understandable answersDirect explanations, descriptive headings, definitions, steps, and complete answers with context.
GEO · Credible source materialClear business identity, original examples, verifiable evidence, honest comparisons, and maintained facts.
These layers overlap. The diagram shows complementary work, not a sequence that guarantees inclusion or a measured weighting of ranking factors.

The new age of AEO and GEO

From short query

“Best CRM” starts with a broad category.

To a fuller need

“A CRM for five people, little admin time, and appointment follow-up.”

To a follow-up

“How would the first-year costs differ if we double the team?”

AI search experiences can combine information across several pages and questions. Google describes query fan-out: related searches used to gather supporting information. This makes specific, well-explained subtopics useful alongside broad service pages.

For a business, the opportunity is to publish knowledge that helps someone make a decision: what a project involves, what changes the cost, when an option fits, and what evidence supports a claim. Original project lessons and clear comparisons are more useful than repeating a definition across dozens of thin pages.

SEO still matters.

Google says its existing SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet; there is no special AI schema or extra AI text file required for those features. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion.

An AI mention is also different from a website visit. A person may get part of an answer without clicking, then return later through another channel. Measure qualified inquiries and customer outcomes alongside visibility. Avoid treating a citation count as revenue or a fixed position in an AI response as a dependable ranking.

What should change in the content?Keep the facts useful, specific, and easy to verify.

Explain the conditions

Replace a sweeping “best” claim with the situation where an option fits, the tradeoff, and when another option may be better.

Make evidence visible

Use attributable sources, genuine examples, dated pricing, and clear authorship or business ownership. Do not invent statistics or case studies.

Write in useful sections

Use descriptive headings and concise openings, then add context. Each section should make sense without depending on an animation or a chart alone.

Maintain the source

Review changing facts and correct errors. Keep contact details and service descriptions consistent across your website and business listings.

Measure three different outcomes.

Discovery

Are relevant queries finding the right pages?

Use Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to review search activity and indexing.

Reference

Is your content being used as a source?

Bing's AI Performance report can show cited pages and grounding queries in supported Microsoft experiences. It is not a complete picture of every AI platform.

Business value

Are more suitable customers taking the next step?

Track qualified calls, forms, booked conversations, and sales outcomes. Compare trends with your normal seasonality.

Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode activity within the Search Console Web performance data. Avoid claiming that a normal search report isolates all AI traffic. Use available referral data, platform reports, and lead quality together.

A practical first-month plan

First · Foundation

Make the essentials findable.

Check important pages, internal links, page titles, business details, and useful service descriptions. Review indexing and access in your webmaster tools.

Then · Useful answers

Answer real customer questions.

Choose five questions from sales conversations. Write a clear answer, the practical steps, and the exceptions. Link each answer to the relevant service or deeper guide.

Next · Evidence

Add reasons to trust the answer.

Add an original example, a comparison, or a genuine project lesson. Cite changing facts and show when they were reviewed.

Ongoing · Review

Check the outcome and improve.

Record a baseline for relevant searches and inquiries. Review a small, consistent set of customer questions; refresh weak or outdated pages.

Your publishing checklist

HTML makes content available without waiting for a script to generate it. It supports access and discovery; it does not by itself guarantee that a search engine or AI platform will index or cite a page.
